Jeffrey C. Apfel joined Brandeis University in August 2009 from the Boston law firm Ropes & Gray, where he served as chief operating officer. In that position, he managed the firm’s various administrative functions and helped carry out its strategic and operational initiatives.
Apfel has extensive experience in higher education. From 2004 through 2007, he was senior vice president for administration and finance at Rutgers University in New Jersey, where he oversaw finance functions, internal audit, facilities, information technology and human resources. From 1996 to 2004, he served as executive vice president for administration and finance at the Rhode Island School of Design.
From 1983 to 1996, Apfel worked in investment banking, focusing on public finance and, specifically, education finance. Prior to that, he worked in the public sector in the New York State Governor’s Office and the New York City Office of Management and Budget.
Apfel holds a bachelor's degree from Syracuse University, a master’s degree in teaching from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, and a master’s in public administration from the State University of New York at Albany.
