Major/minor: IGS & East Asian Studies with minors in Politics and History
Study abroad program: CET/ Chinese Studies and Internship in Beijing, China (Fall 2016)
Reason you chose this program: I chose to attend CET’s Beijing Internship Program because I wanted to immerse myself in a foreign language and culture. CET provided just that with a language intensive curriculum and great internship placement assistance.
Favorite class: My favorite class abroad was Chinese. It was challenging but rewarding and had great individualized instruction. Plus, I finally learned how to write characters.
Housing situation: Each CET student was placed with a native Chinese roommate from Capital Normal University in an international dorm, so it was easy to meet other foreigners at the university as well. All CET Internship Program students lived on the same dorm floor and had nice amenities!
Best memory: My favorite memories are going on bubble tea runs with my classmates, visiting the Great Wall of China and the Summer Palace, and hanging out at cat cafes with classmates and coworkers. The Great Wall was such an intense hike but the views were amazing and so peaceful. The Summer Palace was also one of my favorites because of its beautiful architecture and views of both the mountains and of Beijing. Cat cafes were also super fun, homey, and unlike the ones in America. Their food and drinks are delicious and the cats are so adorable!
Greatest challenge: Having no Mandarin character writing abilities under my belt was definitely tough.
What you know now that you didn't know before: I know how to write now yay!
Fact about China that you think people would be surprised to learn: Chinese transportation systems are amazing!
