Back From Abroad

Welcome Back! As you begin to integrate back into life at Brandeis University, we invite you to take a look at these pages. We hope they can help to guide you through the re-entry process and offer you some interesting opportunities to become involved with the international community.

Mandatory Study Abroad Re-Entry Credit Transfer Session
You must attend one of the Study Abroad Re-Entry Credit Transfer Session offered during the first week of the semester. At this sessions you will learn about the transfer credit process and have a chance to ask any questions you may have.

You can find the locations and times of these sessions on the calendar page: http://www.brandeis.edu/abroad/calendar.shtml.

Remember you must attend one of these sessions to ensure your study abroad credit is transferred.

Transfer of Credit
Upon return to Brandeis University it is essential that you transfer the credit you earned abroad, otherwise your work overseas will not count towards a Brandeis University degree. The following steps are necessary to complete this task:
  1. You must have an official transcript sent to the study abroad office. Check with your program to ensure a transcript will be sent and/ or fill out any necessary paperwork.

  2. You must fill out a program evaluation. This is available in the back of your Study Abroad Workbook, online or in Usdan 127.

  3. If you are seeking credit for General University Requirements, such as School of Creative Arts, Non-Western, etc., please email J. Scott Van Der Meid (svanderm@brandeis.edu) the name of the class, a brief discription or the syllabus.

  4. The Study Abroad Office will then process your study abroad transfer credit with the Registrar's Office. Please allow 2-3 business days for your credit to be processed.

  5. Your credit will appear on your Brandeis University record in sage and also on your official transcript.

  6. You will receive a copy of the credit that was transferred in your local mailbox from the Study Abroad Office along with a photocopy of your overseas transcript. For each major/ minor declared in sage, the Study Abroad Faculty Liaison will also be mailed a copy of your credit evaluation and overseas transcript.

  7. Meet with the Study Abroad Faculty Liaison to assign department credit for majors or minors. You should download and complete a Petition for Major/ Minor Transfer Credit (TC03) for each department where you are seeking credit approval. After filling out the form and gathering the necessary paperwork, please make an appointment to meet with the Liaison.

** Students can track the progress of their individual credit transfer process in sage by logging into sage and reviewing their Study Abroad Checklist at: Home > SA Self Service > Personal Portfolio > Home > To Do List

Get Involved
Coming back to the US after a year or semester abroad can bring about many feelings for students. One of the best ways to beat the re-entry blues is to become involved with the international community here at Brandeis. You can participate in the International Club, write an article for the Justice or the Hoot, and volunteer to speak with students who are just beginning the process of studying abroad. Past returnees have suggested several ways to keep the experience alive - see their suggestions. We are here to listen, assist you and be a safe space to reflect on your time overseas. Don't hesitate to stop by.

Share your memories of study abraod wilth others and perhaps win a prize by entering our Photo Contest.

If you would be interested in volunteering for our office, please fill out the Volunteer Information Sheet and you will be added to our list.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact us.

Graduate School & Overseas Transcript Requests
If you are planning to apply to graduate school, please remember that your Brandeis transcript does NOT show your grades for study abroad. You will have to provide copies of both your Brandeis transcript and your study abroad transcript with every graduate school application.

If you are directly enrolled in a foreign university, additional individually-sealed official transcripts may be sent to the same address to be kept on file until you need them to be sent to graduate, law or medical schools.

You also can request a copy of your international university transcript by filling out this form. If you are abroad through an American-based program you should order original transcripts on an as needed basis to be sent directly from the American sponsor institution.

Hiatt Center Resources
Many students after they return from overseas express a great interest in finding a career with international connections. Some are seeking ways to return to their host country overseas and still others wish to pursue graduate work abroad. Whatever you might be interested in, the Hiatt Career Center has a lot to offer you.

The following link will bring you to the Study Abroad/Hiatt Career Center information page. This is a great place to start learning more about how your study abroad experience can be integrated with your next step in life after Brandeis.
