Brandeis Residency Requirement
Students entering Brandeis as first years in August of 2003 (Class of 2007) and thereafter are subject to the following policy regarding residency.
The residency requirement at Brandeis will allow you to transfer one semester of credits (from AP exams or college courses taken elsewhere) and still go abroad for one semester. If you wish to go abroad for the full academic year, however, you will not be able to transfer any additional credits towards residency.
Please keep in mind that AP and courses taken outside Brandeis may still be used for "purpose" (placement, pre-requisites and some university and departmental requirements), even if you don’t officially transfer them.
The following chart lays out the options for completing your degree:

(More information about this requirement can be found in the Brandeis Bulletin.)

Transfer Students
It is possible for most transfer students to study abroad, provided that you meet Brandeis’ minimum residency requirement of 2 years. In addition, you cannot have more than 16 transfer credits when you apply to study abroad.
Please note that beginning with students who entered Brandeis Fall Semester 2003, the new residency requirement restricts the number of outside credits a student may transfer to Brandeis. Therefore, depending on how many credits are transferred, these new regulations may not allow some transfer students to study abroad. Please consult the study abroad staff with any questions.

Midyear Students
As a midyear student, you may be transferring credits from AP exams or college courses taken elsewhere. It is certainly possible for you to study abroad for a semester, even a year. Please read the Residency Requirement section above carefully.

Sophomores
Students who would like to study abroad during the 2nd semester of sophomore year will need to petition the Executive Committee of the Committee on Academic Standing (COAS). Please set up an appointment with J. Scott Van Der Meid, Director of Study Abroad, to learn more about the petition process.

Seniors
It is possible to study abroad fall semester of your senior year at Brandeis. We recommend that you set up an appointment with a member of the study abroad staff and we may refer you to the Office of the Registrar (781-736-2018) or your academic advisor in Academic Services (Usdan 130, 781-736-3470) to ensure you are on schedule with your graduation requirements.
Brandeis regulations state that students must spend their final semester before graduation on the Brandeis campus. If you would like to study abroad during the spring semester of your senior year, please make an appointment with the Director of Study Abroad.
