Sachar Undergraduate International Scholarship

2008-2009 DEADLINE: FRIDAY, MARCH 6, 2009

For the past 30 years, thanks to the inspiration of President Abram Sachar and the continued support of Brandeis alumni, professors, and staff, the Office of Study Abroad has administered a grant competition for students on need-based financial aid planning to study abroad during their college career. We encourage applications from all qualified undergraduates, especially sophomores whose GPA is at least a 3.0. Although competition is keen, each year, between 5 and 10 undergraduates receive funds (ranging from $500 to $5000) to help support their goal of studying abroad. Candidates are evaluated on the basis of a project statement, a faculty recommendation, and for finalists, an interview.

GUIDELINES:
Please read carefully the following guidelines and instructions. We look forward to receiving your application and wish you all the best in your planning.

ELIGIBILITY:
Students eligible to receive financial aid from Brandeis University may apply for a grant to study abroad for Fall 2009, Spring 2010, Academic Year (2009-2010) or Summer 2010. The only merit scholars (e.g. JBS, Presidential) who may apply for a Sachar International Scholarship are those who also qualify for need-based financial aid.

The following scholarships have additional eligibility requirements:

  • The Edward Cohen Scholarship supports students interested in studying abroad in Israel.
  • The Helen Ke Scholarship is available to students interested in studying abroad in China and learning Chinese.
  • The Epstein-Meyer Schindler Endowment for Overseas Study is available to female Humanities students interested in studying overseas.
  • The Joel Friedland '76 Endowed Study Abroad Scholarship gives preference to students from the Midwest but any student with need-based financial aid may apply.
  • The Alberta Gotthardt and Henry Strage International Scholarship is designed to support students wishing to study abroad in a developing country outside of the U.S., Canada or western Europe.
  • The George and Gertrude Gerzon Endowed Scholarship for Eastern European Holocaust Studies was established to support student that have completed course work offered by the Brandeis University Near Eastern and Judaic Studies Program, who will be studying in Eastern Europe.  Preference will be given for those who will be studying in Poland, or a program that includes course work or projects related to Holocaust Studies in Eastern Europe.

EXCEPTIONS:
Applicants for the Helen Ke scholarship for study in China may be considered regardless of their financial aid status.

PROJECT STATEMENT:
Your essay should be concise (500-750 words) and focus on your academic reasons for studying at the site you have chosen. How will studying abroad strengthen your academic profile? How will the experience enhance or complement your field(s) of concentration? Will the experience inform your research interests? What is special about the particular program or university to which you are applying (courses, faculty, facilities)? Your statement of purpose will be most effective if you refrain from generalizing about the virtues of study abroad - remember, every one applying will be engaged in study overseas. A well-written statement of purpose 1) illustrates why a particular study abroad experience is an integral and necessary component of your Brandeis University education and/or post-graduation plans and 2) communicates why a grant for international study is essential to your achieving these goals.

INTERVIEW:
Due to the volume of applications, we are unable to interview everyone. Finalists will be contacted by the Office of Study Abroad and invited to schedule a mandatory interview in late March. The committee members will have read your application in its entirety. Although brief (10-15 minutes), the interview represents an opportunity for you to amplify and clarify the points you make in your proposal. Please plan to come to the interview location at least 5 minutes prior to your scheduled time.

AWARDS:
You will receive a letter approximately two weeks after your interview informing you of your status. Special note to students who may be chosen as alternates: because a classmate's plans may not change until late in the summer, you may not know the final status of an award until the fall semester and should plan accordingly.
