Topic for fall 2008: Truth and Objectivity. What is morality all about? What do we mean when we say something is "good" or "right"? Are we saying something that can be true or false, or are we just expressing our feelings? If moral claims can be true or false, what makes them so? Is morality a natural phenomenon that can be studied by the sciences? Is anything objectively good or bad, regardless of what we think about it?

Topic for fall 2008: Transcendental Arguments. Kant argued that by reflecting on the conditions for the possibility of experience, we can reach substantial conclusions about the world. Kant's strategy is deployed in contemporary philosophy in terms of so called transcendental arguments. Yet can reflection on the possibility of our experience really tell us something about a world that is mind-independent? Or are we forced to conclude that the world depends on our experience in a systematic way? Readings will be from Hume, Kant, Strawson, Stroud, Davidson, Cassam, and others.
