Choosing Courses:
Building The Right Schedule For You
Everyone's schedule will be different. Things like AP, IB or A-Level exams, whether you enter Brandeis in the Fall or in the Spring (Midyears), as well as your foreign language interests and background can change what you might want to take in your first semesters. We encourage you to work with your Faculty/Staff Advisor, your Roosevelt Fellow, the Advisor to the First Year Class and your other advising resources to make sure that the schedule you build is right for you. On this page you will find some helpful information to help you get started.
The first year schedule begins with the required seminar, the University Writing Seminar, and for some, Composition. Students who have been assigned to take a required composition course will be notified over the summer, before course registration begins. Composition must be taken in the fall semester. Students taking composition in the fall must take their UWS course in the spring semester.
Here are a few sample schedules to consider:
| (Option A) | (Option B) | |||
| Fall | Spring | Fall | Spring | |
| 1 | foreign language | foreign language | class in possible major/minor | UWS |
| 2 | UWS | class in possible major/minor | class in possible major/minor | foreign language |
| 3 | class in possible major | class in possible major/minor | foreign language | class in possible major/minor |
| 4 | fun class | fun class | fun class | fun class |
| PE | PE |
Of course, if you are exploring lab sciences or considering being pre-med, then this would change a bit. We suggest that students taking a course with a corequisite lab, (a science lab, music lab, or theater practicum) take 18 credits or 4.5 classes. Most students who are interested in being pre-health begin their preparations by taking general chemistry in their first year. Many will also take a semester or two of mathematics.
A general pre-health schedule for the first year might look like one of these options:
| (Option A) |
(Option B) |

| Fall | Spring |

| 1 | fun class |
math | fun class |

| 2 | UWS | foreign language | math or foreign language | math or foreign language |

Whatever you choose to study at Brandeis, it is important that you find a schedule that works for you and allows you to get the most out of your Brandeis experience. If you have any questions about building the right schedule for you, please call the Office of Academic Services at 781-736-3470 or email either of the Advisors to the First Year Class.
