Effective Notetaking

Good notes are your primary resource for reviewing course material, writing essays, and preparing for exams.

Whether from a textbook, literature, lecture, or lab, the most important aspect of notes is how useful they are when you need them later. There are multiple ways of taking effective notes and it is important to find the combination of techniques that works best for you. Different strategies will also be most helpful for different types of material and intended purpose (essay structure, concept review, memorization, etc).

Working with another student in your class is also a good way to review material; two heads, and two notebooks, are better than one. Make sure, though, that your review sessions do not involve preparation for assignments, and always check with your instructor before doing projects in pairs or groups.
