Hyaekyong (Hagan) Bang
Class of 2007

Hagan Bang

Hagan first found out about Brandeis while competing for a scholarship through the Posse Foundation. At the time, Brandeis was her first choice school because she discovered the strength of the sciences at the university. Moreover, she was impressed that the percentage of Brandeis students who get accepted to medical school was well over the national percentage. As a direct result of her training and experiences as a Posse Scholar, Haegan realized the importance of having a welcoming community, and has taken steps to ensure that Brandeis remains an institution that is welcoming of people from all backgrounds. While going through the interview process for the Posse Scholarship, Hagan met Professor Dora Older.

“She was a very passionate and dedicated educator.  Professor Older was actually one of the people at the final round of interviews on the selection committee. When I met her again, she remembered me very clearly... even my name (and that's not easy).   Recalling that I said my father was ill, she asked me how he was doing.  The fact that she remembered this made me feel very special.”

Hailing from Queens, NY (she moved there from Seoul, South Korea when she was four year old), Hagan is a triple major in Neuroscience, Biology, and Psychology.  She has also completed the Pre-Medical Program with hopes to one day become a Pediatric Neurosurgeon and a General Medical Practitioner working with under-resourced communities. On campus, Hagan is a part of the coordinating board for Students Organized Against Racism (SOAR), is very involved with KSA as Korean Night Coordinator, Public Relations Chair, and former President, and also participates in various Intercultural Center clubs like the Brandeis Black Student Organization, and AHORA, a Hispanic/Latino awareness group dedicated to educating and exploring the political, social, and cultural differences of that particular community.  In addition, she has also coordinated the Mosaic Program and served as an Orientation Leader.
