Knowledge Justice Excellence

Adam Jacobson
Class of 2009

Adam Jacobson

Given his majors in Neuroscience and Biology, this Jupiter, Florida native hopes to ultimately become a neuro-ophthalmologist or to do further research in neuroscience. Adam is currently a research assistant in a Neuroscience laboratory on campus where he works for fifteen to twenty hours per week. He chose Brandeis primarily because of the strength of the Neuroscience program, noting the collaboration between students and professors and the numerous opportunities to do research as an undergraduate.

Adam also enjoys the presence of an active Jewish population and the close-knit community feeling of the campus. Towards the end of the spring semester of Adam’s freshman year, he had a long talk with Professor Don Katz of the Psychology Department.

“I was confused about whether or not I wanted to go to medical school, and he sat down for a very long time and reasoned through everything with me.  He helped me see things more clearly, and I cannot thank him enough.”

Adam’s experiences at Brandeis have exposed him to the numerous possibilities available to someone with his particular interests.  He was very active in his high school, participating in clubs like the Spanish Club, National Honor Society, Model UN, Key Club, Relay for Life, and Debate Team, in which he held several positions.  Here at Brandeis, Adam is involved in a variety of activities including volunteering in the Admissions office and participating in two dance troupes - B'yachad, the critically-acclaimed Israeli folk dance troupe, and the Brandeis Swingers, a swing dance group.

“I’m a pretty nerdy kid...in a good way,” Adam admits.  “In my IB Theory of Knowledge class, my classmates and I were taught to ‘embrace my nerdiness’. During B'yachad rehearsal one evening, we were practicing one of our dances which end up in a 'Y' formation. I ended up shouting, ‘we look like an antibody!’ (Antibodies are Y shaped)  All of the pre-meds loved it!”

Proving that one can never have too many interests, Adam also plays guitar and bass, and has a black belt in tae kwon do!
