Project Leaders

Ziad Abu Awad is assistant to the dean for student affairs at Al-Quds University. He participates in the undergraduate student exchange and traveled to Turkey for the Summer Undergraduate Institute in August 2007.

Alwina Bennett is assistant provost for graduate student affairs at Brandeis University. She is the Brandeis student affairs leader of the Summer Institute in Turkey and other undergraduate exchange initiatives.

Khuloud Khayyat Dajani serves as project director for the Brandeis/Al-Quds partnership at Al-Quds and is co-chair of the partnership steering committee. She is a professor in social medicine and health policy at Al-Quds University, the assistant to the board of trustees and the president, the dean of public health and the head of the child institute for health and development. She also co-directs the public health academic exchange with Brandeis Heller School professor AK Nandakumar. Dr. Dajani visited Brandeis in September 2004, June 2005 and May 2008 to advance the conception of the partnership and plan its implementation. She met with A.K. Nandakumar when he visited Palestine in 2006 for the Health Policy exchange.

Ola Hussein is an Admin Assistant for the Al-Quds-Brandeis Project at Al-Quds University. She joined the Al-Quds undergraduate students as Admin Coordinator for the 2008 trip to Turkey, and hosted the Brandeis student delegation in May 2009. Ms. Hussein finished her undergraduate studies at Bethlehem University in Sociology and Administration, and is working now on her thesis to finish her graduate studies in Community Mental Health at Al-Quds University.

Bryan McAllister-Grande is the assistant director of the Office of Global Affairs at Brandeis University. He coordinates partnership logistics and details, and he visited Al-Quds University in May 2008 to assist with documentation of the partnership. He coordinates the undergraduate exchange and Summer Institute planning.

Robin Feuer Miller is the Edytha Macy Gross Professor of Humanities and Chair of the Department of German, Russian, and East Asian Languages and Literature. She was the Brandeis faculty leader for the 2008 Summer Institute.

Sand Salhout is the office manager of the Vice President for Academic Affairs and was the Al-Quds student affairs co-leader for the 2008 Summer Institute. She has been affiliated with Al- Quds University for seven years. She has B.A in Business Administration from Birzeit University and MA in Business Administration from Al- Quds University; she is also a part time faculty member at the Faculty of Business and Economics. Ms. Salhout has also participated in a number of academic and training workshops in Canada, Spain and Jordan.

Basem L. Ra'ad is a professor in the Department of English at Al-Quds University. He was the Al-Quds faculty leader for the 2008 Summer Institute.

Daniel Terris is the vice president for global affairs and the director of the International Center for Ethics, Justice and Public Life at Brandeis University. He serves as project director for the partnership at Brandeis and is co-chair of the partnership steering committee. He also co-directs the American studies exchange with Mohammed Dajani. He visited Al-Quds in December 2003, February 2005, December 2005, January 2007 and January 2008 to plan and implement the partnership.

Michaele Whelan is the vice provost of Brandeis University. She was the Brandeis faculty leader of the 2007 Undergraduate Summer Institute. She has hosted several Al-Quds delegations to Brandeis.

Elaine Wong is the senior associate dean of arts and sciences at Brandeis. She has been an organizer of the Brandeis Summer Institute in Turkey and participates in the Effective Teaching exchange with Susan S. Lanser and Said Zeedani. She visited Al-Quds University in May 2006, October 2007, and May 2008 to further the exchange; she hosted delegates to Brandeis in October 2006 and in 2007.

Said Zeedani is the vice president of academic affairs at Al-Quds University. He was the faculty leader of the 2007 Undergraduate Summer Institute for Al-Quds, and he visited Brandeis in Spring 2007. He also participates in the Effective Teaching exchange with Elaine Wong and Susan S. Lanser. He hosted Brandeis University delegates to Al-Quds in December 2005, October 2007, and May 2008.

Participants

Mohammad Abu-Qabita studies Medical Imaging at Al-Quds University. He participated in the 2008 Summer Institute.

Sinan Abu Shanab studies Information Technology at Al-Quds University. He participated in the 2008 Summer Institute.

Khalil Muhammad Khalil Adwan is a student in the faculty of Medicine at Al-Quds University who participated in the 2007 Summer Institute.

Anwar Alhalabiea is a student of political science at the College of Arts at Al-Quds University and president of the student council.

Abedalrahman Aqel participated in the 2007 Summer Institute in Turkey. He is studying Business Administration at Al-Quds University and is a member of the Al-Quds student union.

Marwan Aqel studies Electrical Engineering at Al-Quds University, and began his fourth year in the fall of 2008. He participated in the 2008 Summer Institute.

Juana Batarseh is from Bethlehem and she began her fifth year in Dentistry at Al-Quds University in the fall of 2008. She participated in the 2008 Summer Institute.

Claire Cooper began her second year at Brandeis in fall 2008 and majors in Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies. She participated in the 2008 Summer Institute.

Holly Devon began her sophomore year at Brandeis in fall 2008. She participated in the 2008 Summer Institute.

Jumana Tawfiq Edkeidek is a student in the faculty of Dentistry at Al-Quds University who participated in the 2007 Summer Institute.

Joe Farbeann majored in Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies and History at Brandeis University. He participated in the 2007 Institute. He graduated from Brandeis in May 2008.

Ranin Ghazi Hadid is a student at Al-Quds University who participated in the 2007 Summer Institute. She is studying English Language and Literature with a minor in Gender and Development.

Jared Hirsh began his junior year in fall 2008 studying Politics and International and Global Studies. He participated in the 2008 Summer Institute.

Rawan Kamal studies Business Administration at Al-Quds University, and participated in the 2008 Summer Institute.

Jessica Kent began her senior year in fall 2008 majoring in Psychology and Women and Gender Studies at Brandeis University. She participated in the 2007 Institute.

Gabriela Lupatkin began her senior year in fall 2008 majoring in Psychology at Brandeis. She participated in the 2008 Institute.

Diana Marte began her sophomore year in fall 2008. She participated in the 2008 Summer Institute.

Yael Mazor majored in Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies at Brandeis. She participated in the 2007 Institute, and graduated from Brandeis in May 2008.

Ban Rafat Muwaswas is a student in the Faculty of Dentistry at Al-Quds University, and she started her fifth year in fall of 2008. She participated in the 2008 Summer Institute.

Garrett Nada majors in Near Eastern and Judaic Studies at Brandeis. He started his junior year in fall 2008; he participated in the 2007 Summer Institute.

Tareq Isam Newara is a student at Al-Quds University who participated in the 2007 Summer Institute.

Hasan Odeh studies Computer Science at Al-Quds University. He participated in the 2008 Summer Institute.

Daniel Pereira majored in English and Creative Writing at Brandeis University. He graduated in May 2008, and took part in the 2007 Institute.

Stephen Robinson started his sophomore year at Brandeis in fall 2008. He participated in the 2008 Summer Institute.

Jeremy Sherer started his junior year in fall 2008, majoring in Politics at Brandeis. He participated in the 2007 Summer Institute.

Hilla Shimsoni started her junior year in the fall of 2008 majoring in Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies at Brandeis. She participated in the 2007 Summer Institute.

Danielle Shmuely majors in International and Global Studies at Brandeis University. She participated in the 2008 Summer Institute.

Saghi Sofinzon started his sophomore year at Brandeis in fall 2008. He participated in the 2008 Summer Institute.

Haitham Muhammad Sublaban is a student at Al-Quds University who participated in the undergraduate summer institute in Turkey.
