WINSTON CHURCHILL
Who:
U.S. citizens who have excelled in Engineering, Mathematics, and the Sciences (including computer science). Successful applicants in the past have had a GPA of 3.8 and higher, especially in the sciences.
Eligibility Limitations:
You must be between 19 and 26 years of age and hold a bachelor's degree at the beginning of the academic year for which the scholarship is granted. Brandeis University is only able to nominate 2 students.
Where:
Churchill College, Cambridge, England.
Duration:
One year award.
Application Requirements:
A specific plan of study. GRE or MCAT scores required. 4 letters of reference and the institutional endorsement. Medical certificate.
Campus Deadline:
October 3, 2007 (To Be Confirmed)
Campus Interviews:
Early November
Final Deadline:
November 12, 2007
Notification:
You will know whether Brandeis University will endorse your application shortly after the campus interview. The Foundation usually notifies us in late January whose applications they have chosen to forward to Cambridge; winners are notified in mid to late April.
Who applies nationwide?
The Churchill competition is by institutional invitation only, which means that the applicant pool is highly selective even before the process begins. Approximately 25 schools may nominate 2 candidates each. Of these, the Foundation endorses 18 applications, meaning that these candidates' applications will be forwarded to Cambridge. Of the 18, 10 Churchill Scholars are ultimately chosen each year.
Typical Essay Question:
"Write a brief autobiography, including an account of your interest in science, your reasons for wishing to attend Churchill College and your career plans." (1-2 pages)
