Brandeis Emergency Medical Corps (BEMCo)

Training and Continuing Education

To be an active member of BEMCo, you must be a Massachusetts-certified emergency medical technician (EMT). The minimum training for an EMT involves a 130-hour contact course, practical experience, and a state examination.

BEMCo provides additional training to prepare members to handle the kinds of emergencies that are common on campus and to maintain proficiency.

Continuing Education

Active BEMCo members are required to attend a minimum of three continuing education (CE) classes each semester. Classes cover a wide range of emergency medical services, include simulated call scenarios, and are approved for credit by the Massachusetts Department of Emergency Medical Services (OEMS).

Examples of CE classes we hold include:

  • Call Review

  • Pediatric Emergencies

  • Drug/Alcohol Intoxication

  • Verbal Communication

  • LGBTQ+

  • Infection Control

  • Gynecological Emergencies

  • Gunshot Wounds and other Traumatic Injuries

A schedule of CE classes, times and locations is emailed to the listserv at the beginning of each month.
