Film
In the BIMA film major, you will advance both your creative and your technical skills with coaching and guidance from professional filmmakers. The BIMA film major challenges you to dive headlong into the art of documentary filmmaking in order to develop your craft as you work together with your peers to develop short films.
Throughout the summer, you will receive technical instruction in camerawork, principles of lighting and editing techniques; participate in hands-on exercises in interviewing, scripting, and storytelling; and learn to employ a combination of the technical and the aesthetic to tell a compelling personal narrative.
As you reflect on the twin roles of identity and empathy that successful documentary filmmakers bring to their subjects, you will ask yourself:
- Who am I, as a filmmaker?
- How do I find ways to empathize with and win the trust of a subject who is not like me?
- What could my subject and I possibly have in common?
Much of the course takes place in the field - forming relationships with film subjects and shooting footage at a variety of locations.
You will also have opportunities to participate in workshops and master classes with guest artists, including cinematographers, professional editors and independent filmmakers.
