With the creation of the Carl and Ruth Shapiro Campus Center, many functions and offices formerly located in Usdan Student Center moved to the Shapiro Campus Center. To support the broad range of student activities at Brandeis, the university's intention has been to maintain Usdan Student Center as a focal point of student activities on campus.

Accordingly, in early 2004 the university engaged the architectural firm of Miller Dyer Spears (MDS) to conduct a comprehensive space planning study for the reuse, renovation and upgrade of Usdan Student Center and Kutz Hall.

The university convened an advisory committee to provide input, guidance and feedback to MDS. MDS held many meetings with representatives of all affected university constituents, and also studied building systems and code requirements. They developed several iterations of a space allocation proposal for the two buildings.

MDS was subsequently asked to develop a phasing plan and budget in connection with their space allocation proposal. Working with A.M. Fogarty for cost estimation, MDS projected that the total project cost for carrying out their space allocation proposal for the reuse of Usdan Student Center and Kutz Hall would be approximately $18 million.

The first phase of work in the renovation of the Usdan Student Center began on schedule, in late June 2004. This first phase involved the creation of a portion of the planned one-stop student services center, which had been identified by Senior Vice President for Students and Enrollment Jean Eddy as the highest priority for the Usdan Student Center.

The one-stop center provides students with convenient, single-point access to a full range of student administrative services. A new home for the Department of Community Living was created on the first floor of Usdan, and the lower lobby became the new International Lounge (the old International Lounge was replaced by the central one-stop area).

Elaine Construction provided construction management for this project. The first phase of renovation of the Usdan Student Center was completed in January 2005.
