WSRC Salon of the Arts 2009: Cairns

April 23 – September 25

Presented in conjunction with the Leonard Bernstein Festival of the Creative Arts

The WSRC Salon of the Arts 2009 includes an elegant and eclectic selection of art by WSRC Scholars, focusing on the theme of cairns. The exhibition showcases the range and depth of artistic talent at the WSRC, ranging from painting, photography and sculpture to theater, film and poetry.

Now commonly built as landmarks, cairns – artificial piles of stones – have a rich and diverse history. They have been erected as sepulchral monuments, commemorative landmarks, or for astronomical or supernatural purposes. The work exhibited in the WSRC Salon of the Arts 2009 explores the ancient concept of cairns both literally and conceptually.

For example, Emily Corbató's photographs of Machu Picchu capture in the site the same monumentality and timelessness that cairns possess, and the compositions' meandering paths suggest wending one's way with guidance. Conversely, Marguerite Bouvard's poignant poems convey the significance of places and objects - both personal and public - for their history, associations and meanings. In Karin Rosenthal’s photographs, nude figures meld with the landscape, adopting rock-like characteristics and blurring the line between mobile and immobile, living and non-living, eternal and temporal.

Exhibiting artists include Marguerite Bouvard, Emily Corbató, Karen Craddock, Nurit-Eini Pindyck, Susan Eisenberg, Fran Forman, Karen Frostig, Mary Oestereicher Hamill, Suzanne Hanser, Karin Rosenthal, and Rosie Rosenzweig.

A full-color exhibition catalogue will accompany the exhibition.
