Dress Redress

How much truth lies in the phrase, “you are what you wear”?

There is no denying clothing’s centrality in our lives. We cruise the catwalk, trick or treat, dress up and dress down, dress to kill and follow dress code. Dress • Redress brings together eight contemporary artists who – critically, ambivalently, or monumentally – address the relationship between clothing and identity. Via subthemes as varied as religion, memory, gender roles, popular media, and environmental awareness, each artist challenges us to rethink clothing’s significance. The exhibition seeks to create an open dialogue about how and why our identities are so closely linked to what we wear.

Participating artists include Aparna Agrawal, Candice Smith Corby, Maryjean Viano Crowe, Carol Hamoy, Sandra Eula Lee, Esther Solondz, Andrew Thompson, and Leslie Wilcox. The exhibition is curated by Lisa Lynch, WSRC director of the arts and external relations.

Clothing Drive

Throughout September

Please bring your new or gently worn clothing to the Women's Studies Research Center for our first clothing drive. All donated clothing will be given to area shelters and distributors, to help those in need.
