Current Project

Terry will be researching four 19th-century women sculptors with strong Boston ties. Anne Whitney, Edmonia Lewis, Emma Stebbins and Harriet Hosmer all defied conventions with both their choice of profession and choice of subjects for their art.  Their work is on display in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian, in front of Faneuil Hall (Sam Adams) and the Massachusetts State House (Horace Mann).

Biography

Terry Byrne has been writing about the arts for two decades.  She served for 11 years as the Boston Herald’s chief theater critic and columnist, offering evaluations, commentary, feature and news stories about the theater community in and around Boston.  For eight years prior to that, she was the Herald’s arts editor, making decisions about what stories to follow, what productions to review, and editing the work of a staff of six and a freelance pool of more than a dozen writers.  She particularly enjoyed developing young writers just finding their voices.

Terry is currently a regular commentator on WGBH’s “Greater Boston,” discussing the theater and the arts, as well as frequent contributor to the Boston Globe, writing about theater and dance.
