Strengthening Coexistence Policy

A Survey of Coexistence Sensitivity in International Democractization and Governance Policies

Part One: Survey
Part Two: Lessons Learned

The development and implementation of coexistence policies within governments and organizations can contribute to sustainable coexistence both within and between communities. In the absence of comprehensive, effective, and sensitive policies, coexistence issues may be neglected, and efforts to improve inter-group relations can be sporadic and ineffective.

In this program area CI encourages the adoption of a coexistence lens in the development of all levels of policymaking by:

  • Engaging in research addressing the extent to which concerns about coexistence are a part of international democracy and governance policy;
  • Compiling practical examples and guidance on existing and developing approaches to mainstreaming coexistence practices into the work of related fields;
  • Providing opportunities for organizations to engage with and learn from each other about their work on strengthening coexistence policy.

Presently CI's policy work focuses on Governance and Democracy policy, and at a later stage it will consider Police, Military, and Security. CI's current work on democracy and governance policy includes:

These efforts are designed to provide practical examples and guidance that can be used by governments and policymakers to strengthen and mainstream their approaches to coexistence policy.

This program area is convened by Mari Fitzduff. For further information, please see Concept Paper.
