Grant Awarded for Regional Partnership

Coexistence International at Brandeis University (CI) and the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) are pleased to announce a new project on Transitional Justice and Peacebuilding in West Africa. The project will extend CDD-Ghana's exemplary ongoing work in the transitional justice field, and at the same time implement the complementary approach to coexistence work that is the hallmark of Coexistence International.

Three core activities are envisaged as part of this project, to be implemented by CDD-Ghana. First, capacity-building workshops with participants from Ghana and beyond will focus on transitional justice, reconciliation, and coexistence processes. Second, exchange programs will help to facilitate information gathering and best practices in the sub-region. Third, the publication of a new online journal covering transitional justice processes will provide updates and information on current trends across the sub-region.

Overall, the project seeks to strengthen the professional relationship between the actors and institutions working on transitional justice and those dedicated to peacebuilding in the region of West Africa. The project will serve to consolidate the ties between transitional justice and peacebuilding; develop increased expertise and capacity in the areas of transitional justice, human rights, and coexistence; complement ongoing efforts by national goverments and civil society to prevent violent conflict; and institutionalize the rule of law and a culture of respect for human rights. For CDD-Ghana, the project provides a timely opportunity to implement the vision contained in the Center's West African Network of Transitional Justice (WANT Justice) initiative.

This 18-month initiative is made possible by a grant from CI of US$35,000, awarded to CDD-Ghana after a competitive process that included over 100 proposals from 15 countries. The work will build on CDD-Ghana's significant experience in the area of transitional justice and CI's mission of bringing new actors into the coexistence field by facilitating connections, learning, reflection, and strategic thinking between those in the coexistence field and those in related areas.

In awarding the grant, Mari Fitzduff, Chair of CI's Advisory Board and member of the committee that reviewed all the proposals, stated, "Of all the proposals we considered, this project was the best fit with CI's work to encourage complementary approaches to conflict resolution. We believe this project has the potential to influence the way post-conflict societies address issues of justice, reconciliation, and coexistence. With established expertise in issues of transitional justice and democracy building, and a range of partners and contacts throughout West Africa, we look forward to working with, and learning from, CDD-Ghana."
