Our Work

There are many individuals and organizations doing important coexistence work on the ground, including conflict prevention, management, resolution, and transformation, as well as peacebuilding, and diversity/multicultural work. CI, however, occupies a unique niche:  we strengthen the capacity of these actors to work together to achieve sustainable peace. CI believes that enhancing linkages within the coexistence field and between coexistence and related fields - such as development, governance, human rights, security, and the arts - contributes to a stronger, more cohesive effort towards peaceful and positive intergroup relations.

What Is Coexistence?

CI's programs are organized around five distinct but overlapping areas of work. Each program area seeks to facilitate connections, learning, reflection, and strategic thinking both through in-person gatherings and through the publication of research and tools. CI's program areas are:

Strategic Networking

Reflecting and Learning at the Regional Level

Strengthening Coexistence Policy

Donor Engagement in Building a Complementary Approach to Coexistence Work

Strengthening the Contributions of Theatre to the Coexistence Field

A Complementary Approach
Much of CI's work focuses on the promotion of a complementary approach to peacebuilding. Complementarity means that individuals and organizations working in coexistence and related fields understand that their effectiveness depends upon each others' work. Building upon this understanding, they work with an awareness of, and sometimes in collaboration with, the other disciplines.

CI believes that fragmentation within the coexistence field as well as divisions between coexistence and related fields impedes the achievement of effective, sustainable peace. Without cooperation and recognition of complementarity, key players often work in isolation from one another - a situation which leads to missed opportunities or incomplete responses to conflicts. The role of CI is to assist in the sharing of knowledge and to facilitate cooperation across the spectrum of practitioners, policymakers, advocates, and scholars whose work has the capacity to effect positive coexistence.

CI works across local, national, and international levels, and across the spectrum of people involved in coexistence and related work, and those who have the potential to impact coexistence work. We seek collaborations with other organizations and networks.
