Tips for Handling Publishing Errors

If you are trying to delete an asset and get either of the following messages, don’t panic:

Example 1: Folder hierarchy

"An error occurred during deletion: The folder hierarchy does not allow this asset to be published."

Example 2: Asset not set to publish

"An error occurred during deletion: Asset is not set to publish. Please enable publishing for this asset and try again."

How to fix it


Example 1: Folder hierarchy

In this example, the folder that contains the asset you are trying to delete is not set to publish. We need to set the folder to publish so the asset can be deleted (un-publishing and deleting happen together).

1. Select the folder. Click on the Edit tab. The System tab will show by default.

2. Check the box next to Publish: Include when publishing. Click Submit.

Now your asset is set to publish (which will allow it to be un-published).

3. Return to the asset you want to delete. Delete the asset either from the context menu or the More tab. Click Submit.

Example 2: Asset not set to publish

In this example, publishing is turned off for an asset (page, image, PDF). We need to set the asset to publish so it can be deleted (un-publishing and deleting happen together).

1. Select the asset. Click on the Edit tab, then System.

2. Check the box next to Publish: Include when publishing. Click Submit.

Now your asset is set to publish (which will allow it to be un-published).

2. With the asset still selected, Delete the asset either from the context menu or the More tab. Click Submit.

Note: If you happen to get the same error message again, that means you need to check the option to publish higher up in your site structure. For example, if you set a page to publish and still get this message, next try to folder that contains the page.
