Creating a Flash Slideshow

1. Create a new slideshow folder (New > zeta > Slideshow Folder) within your site. We recommend making it a sub-folder in your main images folder.

2. Edit the existing inner page where you would like the slideshow to appear, or create a new inner page for the slideshow. You will now see a Slideshow option at the top of every inner page in the Edit mode. Click the brackets to browse your site files, and select the "config" file within your slideshow folder. Click Submit.

3. Upload images to your slideshow folder (see Sizing Images for the Slideshow below). To give a photo a caption, edit the image file and fill in the Display Name field. To adjust the order that images appear in your slideshow, click on your slideshow folder, click on the Order column header to sort the files chronologically and use the arrows in the Actions column to move images up or down.

Sizing Images for the Slideshow

The slideshow is 397 pixels wide by 266 pixels high. Please resize your horizontal photos to these dimensions before uploading them to the CMS. A black background is applied to vertical images, which should also be resized to 266 pixels high.

Images that are not resized to these dimensions will look blurry or distorted in the slideshow.

Creating Linked Images

Slideshow images can also link to other Web pages (see the third image in the slideshow on this page). To add a link, edit the image file, click the Metadata tab and enter the URL in the Teaser field.

Ken Burns Effect

You have the option to use the Ken Burns Effect, which pans across a photo or zooms in and out of a photo as it plays in your slideshow. To apply this effect, edit the "config" file in your slideshow folder and select your desired setting. Unfortunately, vertical images will not appear properly when using this effect. Be sure that all of your images are horizontal images if you would like to use the Ken Burns Effect.

Placement on the Page

The slideshow is meant to be prominent and will always appear at the top of the inner page. You may place text below the slideshow or in the sidebar as normal.

Previewing Your Slideshow

The slideshow does not render in the CMS. In View mode, you will see a shadowed box with “No images found in .XML-file.” To preview the slideshow, publish the entire slideshow folder and the page containing the slideshow to webtest.brandeis.edu and xml-webtest (this will be an option when you are publishing the “config” file).

Adding Images to an Existing Slideshow

You may want to add images to an existing slideshow. Once the images are sized properly, upload them to the existing slideshow folder. To give a photo a caption, edit the image file and fill in the Display Name field. To adjust the order that images appear in your slideshow, click on your slideshow folder, click on the Order column header to sort the files chronologically and use the arrows in the Actions column to move images up or down.

To preview the revised slideshow, publish the entire slideshow folder and the page containing the slideshow to webtest.brandeis.edu and xml-webtest (this will be an option when you are publishing the “config” file). If you do not see the new photos on webtest, do a hard refresh (shift+refresh) of the page.
