Is Hezbollah Confronting a Crisis of Popular Legitimacy?
Wednesday, February 12, 2014
Olin Sang 207 | 12:14 - 1:45 pm
Hezbollah’s recent interventions in Syria, particularly in the April 2013 battle of Qusayr has raised questions as to whether it is now facing a popular legitimacy crisis at home. In this talk, Dr. Eric Lob will examine this issue by arguing that Hezbollah’s dual-status as a political party and an independent militia, along with its costly foreign adventures--namely the 2006 war against Israel and recent intervention in Syria--have worked to weaken its popular legitimacy. The talk will also address what lies in Hezbollah’s foreseeable future in light of its weakened status inside Lebanon.
Dr. Eric Lob is a Junior Research Fellow at the Crown Center and holds a Ph.D. from Princeton University’s Department of Near Eastern Studies.
