National Security Advisor to Vice President Biden

Dr. Kahl comes to the Vice President’s office on a two-year public service leave from Georgetown University, where he has been an Associate Professor in the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service since 2007. From 2012-2014, Dr. Kahl was also a Senior Fellow and Director of the Middle East Security Program at the Center for a New American Security, a non-partisan Washington, DC-based think tank.

From 2009 to 2011, Dr. Kahl served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for the Middle East. He was awarded the Secretary of Defense Outstanding Public Service Medal in June 2011. He received his Ph.D. in political science from Columbia University in 2000 and his B.A. in political science from the University of Michigan in 1993. Dr. Kahl is the author of States, Scarcity, and Civil Strife in the Developing World (Princeton University Press, 2006).
