Health: Science, Society and Policy

Accomplishments as a UDR:

  • Reviewed and updated departmental thesis guidelines to better reflect students' experiences writing theses.
  • Organized multiple HSSP senior thesis writers’ brunches to provide a space for thesis writers to share their success and frustrations with the thesis writing process with their peers. I invited professors advising current thesis writers to speak to students during the first half of each meeting.
  • Wrote successful grant application to the Ethics Center for event on Massachusetts' physician-assisted suicide legislation. Although I was abroad when this event actually happened, I wrote the grant proposal myself during the fall semester. 47 people told us they would attend.
  • Organized panel on Massachusetts' physician-assisted suicide legislation. Panelists included three professors and a nurse practitioner in palliative care. The event was on March 20th, 2013.
  • Organized three successful “meet the majors”/open house events for current and prospective students to learn about the major, one for each semester I was on campus as a UDR. 10-25 students showed up to each event.
  • Advise students on course selection and internships. I usually receive 10-15 emails from students per semester regarding which courses to take and how to go about setting up an internship. I respond to each student with a personalized response within 12 hours.
  • Organized two screenings of the film “Escape Fire: The Fight to Rescue American Healthcare,” co-sponsored by the American Health Care TAs. The first screening on December 6, 2012 attracted a large crowd of about 40 students. The second screening on December 2, 2013 attracted a smaller crowd (about 10 people).
  • Facilitated “Brandeis Garden Week” event, co-sponsored by my department. Garden Week was a campus-wide initiative to raise awareness of urban agriculture and garden education. About 20 students attended various events throughout the week, including a cooking workshop and bike ride to a local farm, and displays were set up around campus for the entire Brandeis community to enjoy.
  • Distribute event notices to majors and minors via listserv, including career panels for HSSP majors sponsored by Hiatt and internship opportunities.
  • Work with the Department of Experiential Learning and Teaching as an Experiential Learning Fellow to increase awareness of experiential learning opportunities within the department, such as the Health, Community, and Society practicum offered in the fall.
  • Serve on UDR Council and work to promote partnerships among different departments. Serve as resource for UDRs and liaison between Office of the Dean of Arts and Sciences and UDRs.
  • Organized panel discussion on the Affordable Care Act (“Obamacare”) (event co-sponsored by the Economics UDRs). Number of attendees is not available yet, as this event is happening in the afternoon on March 27th. Panel includes three HSSP and/or economics professors.
  • Communicate with majors/minor about upcoming events in other departments that may be of interest to them.
  • In Fall 2013, had drop-in hours for students to speak to HSSP UDRs about spring course registration in person.
  • Represent department at prospective student and accepted student days, as well as academic fair during orientation. Speak to prospective and current students and answer their questions about the major.
