several years of its existence. Among its various concentrations was a strong one in American Studies, then called American Civilization, led by Max Lerner and an interdisciplinary faculty. Indeed, every sophomore at the University was required to take a basic general education course, "American Civilization II". That requirement continued for many years, even with the advent of departments. It was partly on the strength of that tradition that the faculty voted to create a Department of American Civilization (the name was later changed to American Studies) in the spring of 1970.
