Eirene Visvardi received a B.A. in Classics from the University of Crete and an M.Phil. in Classics from the University of Cambridge. In June 2007, she was awarded her Ph.D. in Classics from Stanford University, where she completed her dissertation on Dancing the Emotions: Pity and Fear in the Tragic Chorus. She is the 2007-2009 Florence Levy Kay Fellow in Classical Studies and Theater Arts at Brandeis. Her principal areas of research are ancient Greek tragedy, archaic poetry, reception of ancient drama, and theories of performance, gender, and the emotions.

Professor Visvardi has taught classes on Greek and Latin at all levels. At Brandeis, her courses will be cross-listed in Classical Studies and Theater Arts. She will be offering classes that explore the aesthetics, ethics, and politics of dance and dramatic performance from Homer to the Greek dramatists and beyond.
