European Cultural Studies (ECS) is an interdisciplinary program of undergraduate
study that leads to a Bachelor of Arts degree.
In the tradition of the liberal arts, Brandeis' ECS concentration integrates and unifies many discrete aspects of European culture. It recognizes that Europe is the cradle of Western thought and values, and that these do not belong to any single discipline. Consequently, the ECS curriculum cuts across boundaries in order more fully to achieve a well-rounded view of the literature, art, history, politics, and philosophy of Europe since the Middle Ages.
The ECS concentration has been designed for those students who are highly motivated and intellectually independent. It aims to offer them flexibility and variety in their selection of undergraduate coursework.
The ECS faculty, drawn from the entire spectrum of disciplines in the liberal arts, has come to the program in the spirit of Brandeis' commitment of connected learning: the idea that the various disciplines are linked together to form a larger whole. The ECS concentrator is positioned better than most to grasp the larger picture of these interconnections.
