Welcome to the Brandeis University Writing Program!

Our mission is to encourage excellence in writing and the teaching of writing throughout Brandeis University. We administer the University Writing Seminars, Writing Intensive courses, the Writing Center, and faculty development workshops. If you are looking for tips about improving your writing skills or ideas about incorporating writing into the courses you teach, you have come to the right place!

University Writing Requirements

University Writing Seminars - University Writing Seminars focus on strategies and techniques of college-level argument taught through the exploration of a subject. Students complete three essays of increasing complexity and submit a final portfolio of at least 25 pages of polished formal writing.

Composition Courses - Some students are placed by the Director of University Writing in courses on the fundamentals of writing, required as a prerequisite to the first-year writing requirement. Please see the FAQ and the University Bulletin for more information.

UWS Writing Contest - Every year, students are invited to submit an essay written in their University Writing Seminar to compete for cash prizes. Winners chosen are published in Write Now!, the Brandeis journal of excellent undergraduate writing.
