Farmer's Market at Brandeis

We are bringing a farmer’s market to Brandeis (next semester) in order to tackle this challenge. We are making an attempt to bring more local produce to the Brandeis campus and this market will make fresh fruits, vegetables, pastries, eggs, and breads accessible to the student body and the Waltham community. Dining services enthusiastically and immediately joined with us and offered to have the Brandeis Bakery supply bread and donate half of the proceeds to future Greening the Ivory Tower Classes.

We met with many people on campus who supported and helped us throughout the process:

  1. As previously mentioned, Michael Newmark, the director of dining services, partnered with us and gave us support and guidance.
  2.  Marc Rudnick, head of the Waltham Farmer’s Market, offered us valuable information about how to run a market. He provided us with examples of the Waltham Farmer’s Market contract, rules and regulations, and his supplier list.
  3. We met with Dennis Finn and Janna to discuss the market’s potential and on-campus logistics.
  4. Our most imperative meetings have been with Ed Callahan, Director of Public Safety and Mark Collins, Vice President of Campus Operations. They officially approved our market and are working with us through future issues and problems.

Everyone who we met with played a necessary and helpful role in our project. Through these meetings we were able to find a location and set tentative dates for our market:

  1. We wanted to have a location which would accommodate a large number of people and be accessible to both Brandeis members and Waltham community members. Our official location is the Athletics parking lot.
  2. We planned our market on Sundays so it does not interfere with Shabbat.
    1. Sunday Sept. 7
    2. Sunday Oct. 5
    3. Sunday Nov. 2

      All From 12-3

We have many interested suppliers: (on the website it says donors, please change to say suppliers)

…and we are in contact with many more

The goal of the farmer’s market is to create a community wide event around a sustainable goal. The market will be not only a way to support to local initiative but a way to bring the entire community together at a celebratory event. We are going to contact WBRS, student events, SEA, and other student performers and groups to participate in the event. We will provide a shuttle bus from Prospect Hill to the market in order to have that community involved as well.
