For The Major

Number of courses: 13

Required:

  1. Environmental Issues (AMST 20a)
  2. Two Modules in Geographic Information Systems: ENVS 100e; or HS 292f; or HS 297f and HS 263f. Each module meets for one-half semester and yields half-course credit.
  3. Environmental Internship (ENVS 89a); or senior essay (ENVS 97a) or Senior Thesis (ENVS 99a and b.) An Environmental internship is strongly recommended.

  1. Environmental History:

  2. Ecological Sciences:
    BIOL 23a Ecology
    BIOL 17b Conservation Biology
  3. Physical Sciences1:
    CHEM 33a Environmental Chemistry
    CHCS 3b Solving Environmental Challenges: The Role of Chemistry
    ENVS 15a Reason to Hope: Managing the Global Commons for Peace
    ENVS 17b Global Warming and Nuclear Winter

Six Electives (at least two each from the Social Sciences/Humanities Group and the Natural Sciences Group).

  1. & 9. Two Social Sciences/Humanities Group courses
  1. & 11. Two Natural Sciences Group courses
  1. & 13. Two environmental electives, from either group

Strongly recommended:
Brandeis Environmental Field Semester
(satisfies two core courses and two electives) or
Study Abroad Field Semester
(SFS, SIT, etc. Typically satisfies three electives).


For The Minor

1. AMST 20a (Environmental Issues).

2. Environmental Internship (ENVS 89a), or Senior Essay (ENVS 97a) or an approved Honors Thesis (99a and b.) The Environmental Internship is strongly recommended.

3. Two electives from the Social Sciences/Humanities group.

4. Two electives from the Natural Sciences group.
