Alumni News

  • Nick Wadleigh (PhD '17 in Mathematics with Professor Dmitry Kleinbock) and Matthew Cordes (PhD '16 in Mathematics with Professor Ruth Charney) have each been awarded Zuckerman STEM Leadership postdocs awards.
  • János Kollár (PhD '84 in Mathematics with Professor Teruhisa Matsusaka) is a co-recipient (with Claire Voisin) of the 2017 Shaw Prize in Mathematical Sciences. Awarded by the Hong Kong-based Shaw Foundation, the Shaw Prize honors recent breakthroughs by researchers in the fields of mathematics, astronomy, and life science and medicine. 
  • Leslie Lamport (MA '63, PhD '72 in Mathematics with Professor Richard Palais) was given an honorary degree at the 2017 Brandeis Commencement, and gave an address at the School of Science diploma ceremony. Lamport was the recipient of the 2013 A.M. Turing Award, given by the Association for Computing Machinery. 

Faculty News

  • Corey Bregman has jointed the Brandeis Math Department as an Instructor in Mathematics.  Corey received his Ph.D. from Rice University in 2017 and specializes in geometric group theory.
  • Olivier Bernardi has been promoted to Associate Professor of Mathematics. Olivier joined the Brandeis Mathematics Department in 2012, and works in Combinatorics and Probability. 
  • Daniel Ruberman has been named a Simons Fellow in Mathematics in support of his sabbatical for academic year 2017-18.
  • Daniel Ruberman and Dmitry Kleinbock have been named members of the 2017 class of the fellows of the American Mathematical Society. Read more at BrandeisNow.
  • Brandeis University has named Ruth Charney as the holder of the Berenson Chair in Mathematics. The nomination recognizes Ruth’s mathematical research as well as her service to the department and to the broader mathematical community. Ruth joins a distinguished list of previous honorees: Ira Gessel, David Buchsbaum, Jerry Levine, and Teruhisa Matsusaka.
  • An Huang joins the Brandeis Faculty as an Assistant Professor in the Fall of 2016. An received his Ph.D. in 2011 from the University of California, Berkeley, and was previously a Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard University. He works on Algebraic Geometry with relations to Mirror Symmetry.
  • The Mathematics department welcomes Konstantin Matveev as an Instructor in Mathematics. Konstantin received his Ph.D. in 2016 from Harvard University. He works on Integrable Probability and Statistical Physics.
  • Omer Offen, a specialist in Number Theory from the Technion Institute, Israel, will be a Visiting Associate Professor of Mathematics. 
  • Professor Bong Lian is a Principal Investigator on a newly-awarded Simons Collaboration on Homological Mirror Symmetry. As part of a group of leading mathematicians, Professor Lian will participate in work towards the goal of proving Homological Mirror Symmetry, a central conjecture in mathematical physics.   • Professor Dmitry Kleinbock stars in a Youtube video (over 265,000 views, so far!) about patterns in the digits of the powers of 2. The video was recorded while Professor Kleinbock was leading a scientific program at MSRI in Berkeley. Beyond the clip shown, there is some extra footage which contains additional explanations of the interesting mathematics behind the patterns exhibited onscreen.

Graduate News

  • Charlotte Rose Morris-Wright has been awarded the Graduate Student Teaching Prize, 2016-17, in appreciation of her dedication and skill in the teaching of mathematics.
  • Yiting Li and Biji Wong have each been awarded the 2017 Jerome Levine prize for their outstanding PhD theses.  Congratulations to both!
  • Jingyue Chen PhD '15 was awarded a New World Mathematics Award Silver Prize at the 2016 International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians. The prize was awarded for her PhD Thesis, Existence and Rigidity of Calabi-Yau Bundles, supervised by Professor Bong Lian.

Undergraduate News

  • Brandon Shapiro '17 was awarded the Shapiro Prize in Mathematics. The prize is given annually in memory of Professor Arnold Shapiro
  • The Brandeis Putnam team, coached by Professor Kiyoshi Igusa, placed 100th in the prestigious and difficult Putnam competition. Congratulations to team members Kaiyue He, Brandon Shapiro, and Alex Mitchell.
