Brandeis Electro-Acoustic Music Studio (BEAMS)

equalizerThe first electronic music studio was established in 1962 by Gustav Ciamaga, now at the University of Toronto. Over the years it has been directed by Alvin Lucier, Harold Shapero, and, currently, Eric Chasalow. Starting in 1990, a major commitment was made to renovating and upgrading the two rooms that comprise the studio.

BEAMS is comprised of two studios. Students, faculty and visiting guest composers have access to facilities that fully integrate digital synthesis and recording equipment as well as vintage analog gear.

The list of equipment includes a Kyma digital audio workstation, MIDI synthesizers, and software from most manufacturers including Cakewalk Music Software, Sonic Foundry, and Waves. There are currently groups using Soundforge for sample editing and Csound direct synthesis language.

Student assistants, both undergraduate and graduate, are actively involved in the studio and we maintain relationships with the music technology companies in the area.
