Prelude
“Complexity in classical music allows a specific, nuanced exploration of the deepest human emotion.” Classical music is timeless. It has broad appeal.”
“I love this class. I loved The Creation and the concert was one of the more fulfilling experiences of my life.”
quotes from University Chorus and Chamber Choir singers of ’05-’06.
Exposition
It is in music ensembles that the singer works with the actual materials of music, experiencing the difference between learning music and learning about music. In the Brandeis Music Department Choral Program, the student singer sings great music appropriate to college level, music that will challenge the singer musically and emotionally, music about which one cannot be neutral, non-commital, or casual, music which carries an internal intensity the ensemble strives to bring to life.
classic is that which is
1) of the first or highest rank
2) serving as a standard
3) adhering to an established set of artistic standards
4) basic, fundamental
5) of enduring interest and quality
(American Heritage Dictionary)
We also sing classic American songs from Broadway and the movies.
Sight-Reading Skills
“Sight-reading gives us a wide range of repertory.”
“The sight-reading was helpful in improving my ability to read music.”
“The music selection was fantastic and the sight-reading was fun.”
quotes from UChor and ChChoir singers
Most rehearsals include some sight-reading, both for practice and to introduce a wider repertory.
Singing
“It feels physically good to sing.”
quote from a UChor singer
We work toward a strong physical base through warm-up and breathing exercises. Through diction exercise and practice, we work toward the technical means of an expressive performance.
