Procedures for Emergency Situations

In the event of an emergency, call Public Safety, x6-3333.

Before there is an emergency, make sure you know the following:

Memos to the Community
The text of President Jehuda Reinharz's Feb. 12, 2003, memo to the Brandeis community regarding Homeland Security is available here.

The text of Executive Vice President Peter French's Feb. 13, 2003, memo to the Brandeis community regarding additional security measure being taken is available here.

Building Captains
Building captains have been designated for each campus building. In residence halls, quad directors and RAs serve as building captains. The building captain's role is primarily an educational one. They are asked to assist people in their building area in understanding their building evacuation plan and the overall campus evacuation plan. A list of building captains is available. For building captains, a one-page handout is available summarizing their role and responsibilities.

Evacuation Information
All cities and towns are required by law to develop comprehensive emergency response plans. In conjunction with the Local Emergency Planning Committee of the City of Waltham, Brandeis University has developed such a plan.

In the event of fire, smoke or other emergency requiring evacuation:

  • Pull the nearest manual fire alarm
  • Call Public Safety, x6-3333

If a fire alarm is sounding in the building you are currently in or if you are notified by Public Safety officers or police officers, you must evacuate the building.

  • If essential personal belongings are close at hand (e.g., wallet/purse and medications) you may take them (but do not jeopardize your personal safety!).
  • Use the nearest building exit.
  • Proceed to the main building entrance.
  • If so notified, proceed as a group to the primary evacuation destination for your building.

In the event that the entire campus needs to be evacuated, follow directions from Waltham Police or Brandeis Public Safety officers and proceed to the emergency transportation staging area (for the area you are currently in) for evacuation by bus to off-campus shelter.

See the list of Emergency Evacuation Destinations and Emergency Transportation Staging Areas, arranged by building.

Also see the Campus Evacuation Map, the colors of which correspond to the Emergency Evacuation Destinations and Emergency Transportation Staging Areas list.

Special Assistance for Evacuation
If you believe you may need special assistance in evacuating your building, please print and fill out this voluntary self-identification form and return it to Ed Callahan, director of public safety, at campus mailstop 066. This information will be used solely for purposes related to assistance in the event of an emergency.
