Chuck Collins

"Economic Apartheid in America: Growing Inequality and Why it Matters"

Collins is the Director of United for a Fair Economy, an independent, nonprofit organization founded in 1994. He recently co-authored with William H. Gates Sr. (the Microsoft billionaire's father) the book Wealth and Our Commonwealth : Why America Should Tax Accumulated Fortunes discussing the controversial estate tax.

Annette Lareau

"The Power of Class, the Limits of Race, in the Transmission of Advantage: An Ethnographic Account"

Associate Professor of Sociology at Temple University, Professor Lareau recently published an article in American Sociological Review on her ethnographic study of child rearing, "Invisible Inequality: Social Class and Childrearing in Black Families and White Families," (American Sociological Review, 67:5 October 2002). Her book on the same project, Unequal Childhoods: Class, Race, and Family Life was published in 2003 by University of California Press. The issue of race and class differences and similarities is at the heart of her work.

Charles Phelps Taft Professor at the University of Cincinatti and chair of the African American Studies department, Professor Collins is the author of the prize winning book Black Feminist Thought and author of Fighting Words. She has a B.A. and Ph.D. ('84) from Brandeis University's Sociology department, and is a highly respected scholar in the field.

Eric Klinenberg


Assistant Professor at NYU, Professor Klinenberg has written the highly acclaimed book Heat Wave: A Social Autopsy of Disaster in Chicago, published by Chicago University Press in 2002. At NYU he teaches Urban Sociology, Theory, Media Relations, and Race/Ethnic Relations.
