Graduate Student Tutors

The English Language Program is looking for new tutors for the remainder of the 2011-2012 academic year. Are you a current graduate student at Brandeis University? Are you interested in a campus job that helps you develop your teaching abilities? Have you had any experience teaching English as a Second Language?

Only current graduate students at Brandeis University are eligible to apply.


Job description:

Tutors meet weekly with Brandeis students who are non-native speakers of English. Tutees include undergraduates and graduate students from 25 different countries, enrolled in Arts & Sciences and GSAS. Tutorials focus on helping tutees strengthen both written and oral skills. Tutors help students draft and revise papers as well as improve their pronunciation, grammar, and fluency. Starting compensation is $15/hour.

Preferred Background:

  • Knowledge of languages other than English
  • Experience traveling or cross-cultural experiences
  • Teaching or tutoring experience, particularly in writing

Job Requirements:
  • ELP tutor orientation
  • 4-6 weekly tutorials
  • Staff-meetings throughout the year
  • Weekly reports to the director about tutees' progress

Undergraduate Tutors

Job Description:

The English Language and Gateway Scholars Programs are seeking undergraduate tutors.  Tutors meet weekly with Brandeis freshmen who are non-native speakers of English.  Tutorials focus on helping tutees strengthen both written and oral skills.  Writing tutors help students draft and revise papers as well as improve their overall reading and writing skills.  Oral skills tutorials may be in small group settings or one-on-one and focus on improving overall speaking abilities.  Starting compensation is $10/hour.

Required Background:

  • Must have completed a UWS course at Brandeis and performed well in the class
  • Must be a current Brandeis sophomore or junior
  • Must be a native English speaker
  • Strong writing, editing, grammar, and communication skills

Preferred Background:

  • Knowledge of language(s) other than English
  • International travel and/or cross-cultural experiences
  • Teaching or tutoring experience (particularly in writing) a plus

Job Requirements:

  • Attend ELP new tutor and all-tutor orientations
  • 3-4 weekly tutorials
  • Staff meetings throughout the year
  • Weekly reports and final semester report about tutees' progress
