Do it in the Dark! Inter-Dorm Competition

It is time once again for Do it in the Dark!, Brandeis University's annual inter-dorm energy-conservation competition. Sponsored by the Energy Savings Program with support from Students for Environmental Action (SEA) and the Brandeis Environmental Sustainability Team (BEST), Do it in the Dark! is a month-long event designed to reduce energy usage and increase energy conservation awareness. This year’s competition will be held between Scheffries, Cable, Gordon and Reitman in the North Quad, and between Shapiro, Deroy, Usen, and Renfield in Massell quad. Read on for information about prizes, where to check your dorm’s weekly standing, and how you can win!

Terms of Competition


Res Hall by Res Hall energy consumption is updated every Wednesday during the contest and can be viewed on leaderboard. Winners will be determined by the Energy Savings Program at the end of February. The first place Residence Hall in each quad will receive $250 toward a "dorm enhancement" gift chosen by the winning residents. Possibilities include a ping-pong table, electronics, or even a pizza party. The winning residence halls will vote on their gift of choice upon the completion of the competition at the end of February 2006.

What You Can Do to SAVE ENERGY and help your dorm win:
  • TURN OFF YOUR LIGHTS when you leave your room
  • Turn down thermostats when you leave your room
  • Turn off your computers & monitors at night (NO IT DOES NOT WAST MORE ENERGY RESTARTING IT)
  • Trade in your old incandescent light bulbs through the Brandeis Light Bulb Exchange for compact fluorescent bulbs that last up to 10 TIMES LONGER
  • Use EnergyStar Appliances
  • Use natural lighting whenever possible
  • Wash your clothes in cold water
  • Take a shorter shower
  • Pull the plug on your appliances when they are not in use
