Energy Saving Tips

One of the simplest steps toward a more sustainable campus is energy conservation. Read on for easy ways you can reduce your impact. For more information about Brandeis University’s Energy Savings Program and past energy-conserving initiatives see Energy Savings Program Updates.

LIGHTS

  • Turn off unnecessary lights in bathrooms, offices, residence rooms, and at home and encourage others to do the same.
  • Use natural lighting instead of electric lighting whenever possible.
  • Use efficient task lighting, such as a compact fluorescent desk lamp, and switch off overhead lighting.
  • If you leave your office for more than 15 minutes, turn off your lights.
  • At the end of the day, turn off lights others may have left on.

HEATING AND COOLING

  • Keep windows and doors closed in heated or air conditioned areas.
  • During the summer, close blinds and curtains to block sun and keep buildings cool.
  • Keep lab hood doors closed when hoods are not in use.
  • Keep lab hood doors open to a minimum when hoods are in use.
  • Dress appropriately for the season.
  • Use hot water sparingly.

COMPUTERS

  • When buying computers, get low wattage "Energy Star" certified products, and make sure all the energy management features are enabled.

OTHER EQUIPMENT

  • Buying new equipment? Select the most energy-efficient products by looking for the EnergyStar label.
  • Turn off all energy consuming research, home, and office equipment when you're not using it (copiers, printers, refrigerators, environmental rooms, fume hoods).
