The Brandeis Institute for International Judges (BIIJ) provides international judges with the opportunity to meet and discuss critical issues concerning the theory and practice of international justice. Institutes are held approximately every 18 months, bringing together judges serving on international courts and tribunals around the world to reflect on the philosophical aspects and practical challenges of their work. The most recent Institute was held from July 23 to 28, 2007, in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, USA. The next Institute is scheduled for January 4-9, 2009, in Trinidad. Twelve international courts have been invited to send a representative to the institute, which will be organized around the theme of “International Justice: Past, Present, and Future.” Nicolas Michel, who just completed his term as the UN Under-Secretary General for Legal Affairs, will serve as a special presenter on the theme of “international justice and politics.”
