Kevin Clements speaks at Brandeis on "The Conquest of Fear in an Age of Terror"

Kevin Clements

Kevin Clements, Secretary General of International Alert, spoke at Brandeis on Monday, November 25, 2002 on "The Conquest of Fear in an Age of Terror." Clements argued that a politics of fear has gripped the United States since September 11, 2001, which has singlemindedly focused on military response to the exclusion of creative responses to violence. He outlined a ten-point "peacebuilding approach to counter-terrorism" which included an understanding of the roots of terror, a focus on the world's weakest and most vulnerable peoples, an emphasis on listening, and a renewed commitment to democracy, human rights, and good governance. The talk was sponsored by the Slifka Program in Intercommunal Coexistence.
