Center receives funding from the JEHT Foundation to support its work in the field of international justice

In 2002, the Center created the Brandeis Institute for International Judges (BIIJ), the world’s first institute designed to enrich the knowledge and strengthen the effectiveness of the more than 200 judges who serve on international and regional courts. With the generous support of the JEHT Foundation, the Center will be able to expand its work in the field of international justice over the next three years (2005-07). The Center plans to:

  • Offer international judges a continuing forum to learn and to connect through the organization of two BIIJs. The next institute will be held in January 2006 in Senegal. The following one is being planned for October 2007 in the United States.
  • Bring international judges together with judges from domestic courts so that they may learn from one another and enhance the complementarity and cooperation that is necessary for an effective global justice system. The first such gathering, entitled “West African Judicial Colloquium: Connecting International and National Justice,” will take place in Senegal after BIIJ 2006.
  • Educate the public in the United States and around the world about the work of international judges and the critical legal issues that they address. This aim will be pursued primarily through a research and publication project on international judges, entitled The International Judge: an Inquiry into the Men and Women who Administer Global Justice.

These activities represent a unique effort to create an integrated, mutually supportive network for sharing knowledge and improving the administration of justice in the world’s transnational courts. Isolation and fragmentation threaten the successes that global justice has achieved to date. The expansion of the Brandeis Institute for International Judges will fill a vital need that is currently unmet.

The Center would like to thank the JEHT Foundation for its recognition and support of the BIIJ.
