Center Board Member Hands Down Major Decision

October 10, 2008

Center advisory board member Shiranee Tilakawardane, a Supreme Court Justice in Sri Lanka, this week delivered a landmark judgment requiring the country’s former president and others to compensate the state for the alleged corrupt lease of land for the construction of a private golf club, according to the Daily Mirror of Sri Lanka. The judgment also orders the Bribery or Corruption Commission to launch an investigation into the transaction.

“[T]he President does not have the power to shield, protect or coerce the action of state officials or agencies, when such action is against the tenets of the Constitution or the Public Trust,” the decision reads.

The case, called Water’s Edge after the name of the golf course, included an incident of hand grenades being lobbed at the home of the lawyer who filed the case, according to Tilakawardane.
