Charles Mulekwa is an award-winning playwright. He is also a producer, who for many years was a member of the National Theatre of Uganda. His interests center on the ways in which war within Uganda have informed Ugandan Theatre. Mr. Mulekwa began writing plays in his native Uganda and has produced such works as The Woman in Me, The Eleventh Commandment, and A Time of Fire.
His anthology chapter focuses on the national theatre in Uganda and its role as a stage on which, through ritual, song and dance, cultural meaning embeds itself within traditional, colonial and postcolonial theatre. Mr. Mulekwa served as a cultural consultant for the award-winning film The Last King of Scotland and is completing his Ph.D. in performance studies at Brown University.
