Classical Studies

Ann Olga Koloski-Ostrow
Research Interests: Roman and Greek art and archaeology. Latin language and literature. Mythology in Greek and Roman Art. Roman Social History and Daily Life.
Qualifications: The internship at CLARC and the Eunice M. Lebowitz Fellowship program are available to majors  and minors in the Department of Classical Studies. The only qualification is a love for the world of Greek and Roman antiquity.
Responsibilities
: CLARC (Classical Studies Artifact Research Center) student interns gain hands-on experience in collection management, photography, restoration, and  exhibition with a variety of ancient artifacts (made of glass, metals, ceramics, and stone) in preparation for careers in art and archaeology or in museum studies and archives.

German, Russian, Asian Studies

Irina Dubinina
Research Interests: Bilingualism. Russian heritage speakers. Teaching language through culture/film/theater. Second-language acquisition in Russian. First language attrition
Qualifications: Some knowledge of linguistics (understanding of syntax, pragmatics, and lexicology) so that the student is able to assist in creating questionnaires/test of language abilities. Solid knowledge of statistics for social sciences and SPSS program to conduct statistical analysis of the data.
Responsibilities: Assist in creating questionnaires, administering questionnaires/tests of language abilities, data entry (SPSS data base), statistical analysis of the data

David Powelstock
Research Interests:
Modern Russian Literature, Modern Czech Literature, Russian & Czech Languages, Comparative Literature, Literary Theory, Translation Studies
Qualifications:
Either native or advanced non-native knowledge of Russian; or small amount of training in philosophy.
Responsibilities: 
Developing annotated bibliographies and summaries of literature; typing of handwritten notes into PC; scanning and OCR assistance; work together with a Professor on construction outlines and thinking about narrative structure for a scholarly book.

NEJS

Sharon Feiman-Nemser
Research Interests: Elementary education. Jewish education. Teacher education.
Qualifications: Background in and understanding of Jewish educational institutions. Background in and understanding of classical Jewish studies (especially Bible and rabbinic literature). Background in and understanding of the contemporary Jewish community.
Responsibilities: Library work, literature reviews, possibly classroom observations, possibly coding of data.

Jon A. Levisohn 
Research Interests: Philosophy of education. Jewish education. Hermeneutics and the epistemology of the humanities. Scholarship of teaching classical Jewish texts.
Qualifications: Background in and understanding of Jewish educational institutions; Background in and understanding of classical Jewish studies (especially Bible and rabbinic literature). Background in and understanding of the contemporary Jewish community.
Responsibilities:
Library work, literature reviews, possibly classroom observations, possibly coding of data.

Kanan Makiya
Research Interests: Middle East; politics; early Muslim history; modern Arab thought; Urban history; politics of modern Iraq; politics of art and architecture. Teaches and studies modern Arab politics with particular reference to the regime of the Ba'th party in Iraq.
Qualifications: Must be a Junior or older who has taken at least 3 courses on the Modern Middle East.
Responsibilities:
Library work, copying and basic research. 

Leonard Saxe
Research Interests: Methodology/research design/evaluation research; mental health programs/interventions; evaluation of polygraph/lie detector testing; socio-demography of the Jewish community; Jewish identity and education
Qualifications: Knowledge of Jewish Studies/Jewish community/Hebrew; Statistical knowledge/ with quantitative data analysis; Knowledge of Social Psychology/sociology; Training/experience interviewing/participant observation; Computer skills (PC support, web design, database management); Writing/editing skills
Responsibilities: To work as research  assistants for teams doing social scientific studies of Jewish education, identity, and demography. The tasks are varied -- from doing interviews, to coding and transcribing, to data analysis and editing.

Romance Studies

Jane Hale
Research Interests:  Cross-cultural literatures and literacies
Qualifications:   Initiative; excellent writing and editing skills; organizational skills; word-processing; knowledge of a second language desirable but not required.
Responsibilities:  Research (library and interviews), writing and editing Professor Hale's book, "Cultures of Literacy" 

Edward K. Kaplan
Research Interests: Abraham Joshua Heschel. Thomas Merton. French romanticism. Michelet. Hugo. Modern French poetry and theory. Baudelaire. Jabes. Bonnefoy. Religion and literature. Translation.
Qualifications:
  Strong knowledge of French and interest in France and Jewish or inter-group issues, such as Blacks/Jews, Muslims/Jews, in contemporary France.
Responsibilities:
Translating essays from French to English; bibliographical research (including newspapers); reading and summarizing material in certain articles or books.
