Profile

Dr. Nguyen¿s research examines how cultural and structural factors (e.g., acculturation, identity, discrimination, oppression) affect the health and well-being of immigrant, minority youth. She is interested in the processes of ¿growing up American¿¿of how immigrants become ethnics over time, of their experiences/internalizations of racial discrimination and microaggressions, and of their social, psychological, and academic adaptation as a result of these processes.

In general, her research is relevant to policies and programs in education (such as the debate over English immersion vs. bilingualism), immigrant integration, and mental health/health disparities. As some have posited, acculturation is one of the key variables (along with racism and poverty) by which health disparities occur.
