ExpertiseMolecular mechanisms of memory storage.
ProfileWork in the Lisman laboratory deals with the mechanisms of memory. A major goal is to understand the molecular mechanism by which memory is stored at synapses. We are testing the hypothesis that a complex between the enzyme, CaMKII, and the NMDA channel is the basis of memory storage. Other work on memory deals with the roles of brain oscillations in working memory. These oscillations appear to provide a code by which multiple memories can be organized and communicated between brain regions. A second major goal of the laboratory is to understand the brain processes that are abnormal in Schizophrenia. One manifestation of the disease is an abnormality in brain oscillations. We have identified the thalamus as a site where this abnormality originates and are working to understand the molecular and cellular mechanisms involved.
