ExpertiseLikelihood and Bayesian methods in structural bioinformatics and single molecule biochemistry.
Evolution of macromolecular structures and assemblies.
Evolution of membrane protein structure and function.
ProfileThe goal of my research is to understand with atomic precision how macromolecules evolve novel structures and functions. We characterize the specific dynamic pathways taken by enzymes during their evolution, by resurrecting entire lineages of ancestral malate/lactate dehydrogenases along multiple evolutionary pathways, analyzing their functions biochemically, and determining their crystal structures in order to view a “stop-action movie” of their evolutionary progression. This work is highly interdisciplinary, relying on X-ray crystallography, enzymology, phylogenetics, bioinformatics, and population genetics.
Undergraduate and graduate mentoring has always been a high priority for me. I am currently a university advisor for first-year undergraduates, and I also am chair of the first-year graduate student rotation committee for the Biochemistry department. Though I have only been at Brandeis for 6 years, I have trained 11 undergraduates in my lab, six of whom performed their thesis research under my mentorship. Upon graduation, most of my undergrads have been accepted into prestigious PhD programs, including at UCSF, Cornell, Stanford, Harvard, Yale, and MIT. I have additionally trained 7 graduate students as thesis advisor for their PhD. Webpage
