An agency’s case statement should attend carefully to donor motivations and give a compelling answer to the question of why give to this organization. Recent years have seen an upsurge in service learning in the Jewish community. This activity, part of an ongoing search for ways to create meaningful opportunities for Jewish learning and engagement, received additional impetus in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. This session demonstrates how the values of a community are articulated through a program and how a case statement, based on these values and program, can be written to appeal to a new generation of philanthropists.

Leadership Programme Meets Boston
March 17-22, 2009
A group of ten young leaders and two professionals from the British Jewish community came to Boston for a week-long seminar organized by the Fisher-Bernstein Institute. The program was sponsored by the United Jewish Israel Appeal of the UK and funded by the Adam Science Foundation. Participants visited a wide range of organizations where they met with top leadership and young leaders in the Boston Jewish community. The seminar included an exploration of Jewish education, approaches to serving diverse populations, Israel education and advocacy, religious organizations and expressions, fundraising, and leadership. By experiencing the similarities and differences between the two communities, participants gained perspective on the challenges and opportunities facing their own community. At the same time, they further developed their leadership and team skills.
